For many years a prescription for Percocet was just that, it was manufactured in only one strength, oxycodone 5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg. Percocet is now made in four strengths by Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc.:
Percocet 2.5/325™ (2.5 mg oxycodone/325 mg acetaminophen) - pink oval tablets
Percocet 5/325 ™ (5 mg oxycodone /325 mg acetaminophen) - blue round tablets (new color)
Percocet 7.5/500™ (7.5 mg oxycodone/500 mg acetaminophen) - peach capsule-shaped tablets
Percocet 10/650 ™ (10 mg oxycodone/650 mg acetaminophen) - yellow oval tablets
The new tablets are embossed with "Percocet" on one side and the amount of oxycodone (2.5, 5, 7.5, or 10 mg) on the other side.
Endo has sent a letter to prescribers with instructions to include the strength of both the oxycodone and the acetaminophen on the face of the written prescription. Pharmacists need to be aware of the new strengths and call prescribers to clarify prescriptions which are just written for Percocet.
