Pain Management CE Requirement


What is this requirement?

This requirement was mandated by the 86th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, per House Bill 3285. This bill updates Section 481.0764 of the Texas Health and Safety Code to include the following:

    (f) A prescriber or dispenser whose practice includes the prescription or dispensation of opioids shall annually attend at least one hour of continuing education covering best practices, alternative treatment options, and multi-modal approaches to pain management that may include physical therapy, psychotherapy, and other treatments.


What is the corresponding TSBP rule language?

From Board rule 295.8(d)(1)(B):

    (B) for renewals received after August 31, 2021 and before September 1, 2023, at least one contact hour (0.1 CEU) annually, for a total of two contact hours (0.2 CEU) specified in paragraph (1) of this subsection, shall be related to best practices, alternative treatment options, and multi-modal approaches to pain management as specified in §481.0764 of the Texas Health and Safety Code;


What courses may be counted toward this requirement?

Any course that is considered an approved program type as outlined by Board rule 295.8 (i.e., ACPE, AMA PRA Category 1 CME, etc.) wherein the primary focus of the course is pain management as specified by 295.8(d)(1)(B) may be counted toward meeting this requirement.
